When we moved back to South Africa from Australia, we had a desperate need to put down roots. We bought a 8Ha (20 acre) smallholding just outside Pretoria, near the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hopital (the Vet Faculty of the University of Pretoria, where Linda worked). We had fallen in love with the thornveld, and wanted to live here for ever and ever.
We rebuilt the remains of the old farmhouse into a gorgeous thatched-roof manor, and stocked the place with chickens, milch-goats and children.
Alas, the dream was short-lived. Political turmoil, lawlessness, danger and isolation sent us scurrying to the Northern suburbs of Johannesburg, where we considered our options. After 9 months of deliberation, we applied for Canadian permanent residence. This was granted 18 months later, and we moved to Toronto in July 2004.
Plot 181, Haakdoornboom still remains a dream, as the nightmarish overtones fade. We have never been back, and do not want to know what has happened to it.
